Greenwich sees a baby boom
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, June 1, 2007
More than 40% of the infants born at Greenwich (CT) Hospital last year are from Westchester County, NY, the hospital says, a statistic that reflects new marketing strategies for the hospitalís obstetrics services.
The number of infants from Westchester County born at Greenwich has more than doubled since 1998, according to the Hartford Courant. The boom started when a neighboring hospital closed its maternity ward in 2000, forcing new mothers to look elsewhere for maternity care. To woo patients, Greenwich touted its maternity service as more than delivering babies. At Greenwich, fathers are encouraged to be in the delivery room, and new moms are allowed to stay at the hospital for two days instead of one, a hospital spokesman says. The hospital also offers new mothers classes in prenatal exercise, baby care, breast-feeding, and counseling.
A recent switch in hospital affiliations by a large Westchester group practice to Greenwich Hospital also contributed to the rise in births, the Greenwich Time says.
