House passes informatics education bill

EHR Connection, June 11, 2007

The U.S. House of Representatives last Thursday approved legislation that would fund college-level education in healthcare informatics--a move federal lawmakers say will advance the use of EHRs.

"Everyone is talking about adopting these systems, no one is addressing the workforce concerns," Representative David Wu (D-OR), the sponsor of the bill, said in a written statement.

If the bill passes, the National Science Foundation will be able to award grants to colleges for health informatics research and also establish health and medical informatics research centers. The foundation will also be able to reward schools that boost their health IT programs. The bill now goes to the Senate.
