CMS releases NPPES data dissemination notice
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, June 5, 2007
CMS released their National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) Data Dissemination Notice (CMS-6060-N) in the May 30 Federal Register. The NPPES gives the health care industry another avenue to obtain physician's National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) without asking physicians directly.
The NPPES "uniquely identifies health care providers by the use of an application process and assigns them their NPIs. The NPPES creates a record for each health care provider to whom it assigns an NPI. The records are updated when health care providers furnish updates to the NPPES," according to a notice on the CMS Web site.
The notice includes the following information:
- CMS will make the data publicly available on June 28
- Healthcare providers should review their NPPES data and make any updates or corrections before June 28
- The data will be accessible by downloading an initial file from a dedicated Web site (monthly updates will also be available)
