Tip of the week: Pneumonia measures revisited
Infection Control Monitor, June 1, 2007
The Joint Commission's pneumonia core measures criteria call on physicians to administer antibiotics within four hours of hospital arrival for admitted patients with community-acquired pneumonia.
However, a study in the May Annals of Emergency Medicine showed that it might not be possible to identify 90% of hospitalized patients with a discharge diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia when they present to the emergency department (ED) as indicated in the core measures criteria. The study has prompted revisions to the Joint Commission's criteria.
