Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, May 29, 2007
Doctors Michael C. Chan, William W. Hampton Jr., and Mario Z. Rosenberg each face 47 felony charges for allegedly performing unnecessary procedures at Unity Outpatient Surgery Center in Santa Ana, CA, according to an Orange County Register article published May 16.
The physicians allegedly performed unnecessary procedures, which spanned from treating sweaty palms to removing cysts, and cost patients anywhere from $300 to $1,000 per procedure.
They managed to fraudulently bill $30.5 million to insurance companies for these procedures. which is less than one-third of the broader $96 million that Unity managed to con from insurance companies, according to the Orange County Register story .
According to prosecutors, Unity went so far as to use recruiters, called 'cappers', to find patients through word of mouth.
