Bipartisan bill introduced during HIT week

EHR Connection, May 21, 2007

Last week, Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) introduced The Health Information Technology Act of 2007, a bill that would establish a five-year, $4 billion competitive grant program to help healthcare providers pay for HIT and services.

At least 20% of the grant money would be available to rural areas and regions suffering from a shortage of healthcare professionals, according to a news release. The bill also calls for:

  • Notifying patients if someone has inappropriately disclosed their health records
  • Accelerating the depreciation of health IT software and equipment
  • Increasing Medicare payments to providers who use health IT
