CMS could identify inefficient physicians by mid-2008

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, May 22, 2007

CMS may have the ability to identify and target inefficient physicians by mid-2008, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) Web site. Herbert Kuhn, acting deputy administrator revealed that CMS intends to target inefficient physicians by comparing the number of tests that colleagues ordered with the number of tests that the targeted physician orders for certain types of patients with the same outcome.

CMS hopes to profile as many physicians as possible without formal legislation in place.
