Heart failure studies show mixed results from management

Two new studies generally back the use of disease management (DM) in heart failure, but one of the studies showed that-contrary to previous research-intensive care management involving home visits did not seem to improve outcomes over more conventional, telephonic-based patient management. The two studies, presented in March during the American College of Cardiology's annual scientific meeting in New Orleans, indicated that education and support programs designed to care for high-risk congestive heart failure (CHF) patients with more direct interaction and guidance were successful in both reducing hospital visits and increasing heart failure patients' chances of long-term survival.
