Death at Los Angeles hospital under investigation

Healthcare Security Weekly, May 21, 2007

County and state authorities are investigating the May 8 death of a 43-year-old woman at Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital in Los Angeles. Relatives of the woman say hospital workers did nothing as she lay in pain on the emergency room floor and that officers who were asked to help arrested her on a parole violation, reported the Associated Press (AP).

The woman became unresponsive and died as police pushed her out of the hospital in a wheelchair, the AP reported. She had been prescribed pain medication and released from the hospital, but remained on the benches outside the hospital, The Los Angeles Times reported. Her boyfriend arrived later to find her on the floor in the emergency room and he asked staff for help.

The boyfriend said he told hospital security officers she needed help, but police who responded to a 911 call from the man, instead took the woman into custody after a computer search showed an outstanding arrest warrant for a parole violation, the AP reported.
