Illinois legislation would mandate MRSA testing

Infection Control Monitor, May 18, 2007

The Illinois legislature is now considering a bill that would require hospitals to test at-risk patients for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

If passed by the legislature, hospitals would have to test patients they consider to be at risk for infection. Nearly 11,000 patients in Illinois were infected with MRSA last year, representing a 54% increase over three years, according to the Illinois Hospital Association.

The bill would require hospitals to establish a MRSA control program and annually report patients identified with the infection to the Department of Public Health. Other states are considering similar legislation.
