Insurer develops cost compare site
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, May 4, 2007
An Indiana health insurance company's new Web site allows its customers to shop around and compare prices before deciding which doctor and facility will provide their healthcare.
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, part of Indianapolis-based WellPoint, has announced a members-only Web tool that can be compared to those used by travelers to compare the prices of flights from multiple carriers, says The Indianapolis Star.
A consumer comparing the costs of a normal Caesarean section delivery on the site will find that at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville, IN, the procedure would cost between $5,595 and $7,192, The Star says. According to the site, the same procedure would cost between $7,193 and $8,783 at St. Vincent's Hospital of Indianapolis.
