CVS wants to open Massachusetts clinics
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, May 4, 2007
Hoping to provide quick, inexpensive healthcare to consumers in a region that is plagued by long emergency room waits and waiting lists at doctor's offices, CVS Corp. has asked Massachusetts state officials to allow them to open at least 20 drug store clinics.
Called "MinuteClinics," these in-store sites offer nurse practitioners and physician assistants who see patients in 15-minute appointment slots. They are trained to treat about 20 different ailments, according to The Boston Globe, and are allowed to write prescriptions. CVS clinics in other states charge approximately $60 per visit.
Nationally, there are 400 clinics located in drug stores, discount chains, and supermarkets. If approved, CVS said it would open its first Bay State clinic in Weymouth, a town about 15 miles south of Boston.
