In some states, docs can say 'sorry'

Saying "I'm sorry" used to be considered an admission of guilt for a physician, but now many states are passing laws that encourage doctors to admit when medical procedures don't go as planned, and apologize for them, says MSNBC.com.

Rhode Island lawmakers and their counterparts in eight other states are discussing potential legislation that would allow physicians to apologize for errors, without fearing that their words could come back to haunt them in court. During the past four years, 27 other states have passed similar laws, says MSNBC.

Michael Migliori, MD, an ophthalmic plastic surgeon in Rhode Island, says a physician's apology after a medical error is important to keeping a solid doctor-patient relationship.
