Although ICPs should also focus on other departments, the ICU is a must-see destination because it's a potential hotbed of infectious activity, she says. Only 5% of hospital beds in the country are ICU beds, says Chinnes, but healthcare-associated infections are five to 10 times greater amongst the critically ill ICU population than the general hospital population.
