Louisiana physicians sue state, seeking $100M

Managed Care Weekly Advisor, May 9, 2007

A lawsuit filed by 381 physicians at the West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero, LA seeks $100M reimbursement from the state in compensation for the care administered to low-income and uninsured patients following the closure of the state-funded Charity Hospital in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Bob Johannssen, a spokesman for the state health and hospitals department, said there is no method to pay the physicians for uncompensated care costs.
