Physicians generate $1.5 million annually for their affiliated hospitals
Physicians on average generate $1,496,432 in net revenue a year on behalf of their affiliated hospital, according to a survey by Merritt, Hawkins & Associates, a physician search firm based in Irving, TX.

Surveyors asked hospital CFOs to quantify how much revenue a single physician in 17 specialties generated for their hospitals in the last 12 months. The data included both net inpatient and outpatient revenue derived from patient referrals, tests, and procedures performed in the hospital.

The following specialties generated the most annual revenue:

• Invasive cardiology: $2,662,600
• Orthopedic surgeon: $2,312,168
• Non-invasive cardiologist: $2,240,286
• Neurosurgeon: $2,100,000
• General internist: $1,987,253
