CMS provides NPI contingency plan FAQ
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, April 24, 2007
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) posted a FAQ section on their Web site April 11 in response to their announcement as to a delay in enforcing the National Provider Identifier (NPI) standard beginning April 2.
The FAQ answers vital questions such as:
- After the compliance date for the NPI, can a covered health care provider continue to use other numbers, such as legacy or proprietary identifiers, in addition to its NPI, to identify itself?
- How long will it take to get an NPI?
- On what date do health care providers need to use their NPI?
