Father drops newborn after being shot by stun gun

Healthcare Security Weekly, April 23, 2007

A Houston security officer used a stun gun on a man who was carrying his newborn daughter and tried to leave the hospital without permission, according to news reports.

The 20-year-old man was charged with endangerment after the incident at The Women's Hospital of Texas April 12, reported The Houston Chronicle. An off-duty Houston police officer working at the hospital as a security guard used a Taser on the father as he tried to leave the hospital with the baby. The man dropped to the hallway floor after being shocked and his two-day-old baby fell from his arms about two feet before landing on the floor, the newspaper reported.

The man told the newspaper he and his wife were preparing to leave the hospital when staff told him he would not be able to leave with the baby. After a failed attempt to leave through the elevators with the baby, who wore an alert sensor that warns staff about potential kidnappings, staff called security. Hospital pediatricians examined the baby and said she was not injured.
