Man who bought gun arrested at hospital

Healthcare Security Weekly, April 23, 2007

Police arrested a Winfield man who brought a gun onto the grounds of the Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital and threatened to take control of the facility, reported the Charleston Daily Mail.

The 46-year-old man, whose wife was a patient in the hospital's intensive care unit, was charged April 17 with threatening a terrorist act, the newspaper said. Police said the man became unhappy and started arguing with two nurses. The man allegedly told his nephew he was going to buy a gun, take control of the hospital, and start shooting people, according to a criminal complaint.

He then allegedly bought a revolver at a pawnshop and returned to the hospital. He was arrested in a hospital bathroom and told police the gun was hidden in his truck. He was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of assault.
