Study: IL hospitals, HMOs report higher profits

Managed Care Weekly Advisor, April 18, 2007

Although Illinois currently contracts with one Medicaid HMO, an investigation was conducted by Allan Baumgarten, a consulting and research firm in Minneapolis, to find new strategies to expand residents' access to healthcare coverage. The results were published and announced at a meeting of the Midwest Business Group on Health.

The report titled, " Illinois Managed Care Review 2006," found the following:

  • HMO enrollment continues to fall, although the decline has moderated
  • Medicare HMO plans are highly profitable and poised to add members
  • HMO premium revenues grew at a slightly lower rate in 2005
  • Health plan profitability improved again in 2005
  • Chicago area hospitals significantly improved their financial results in 2005
