PPV: Government says plan on track for widespread EHR adoption by 2014

But industry leaders express doubt and concern
In 2004, when President George W. Bush called for EHRs for most Americans by 2014, the healthcare industry sat up and took notice. Although 10 years is a long time, it may not be enough time. HHS and The George Washington University estimate that only 10% of physicians currently use EHRs, and other estimates for today's level of hospital adoption are in the 15% range.
It's absolutely a realistic goal, said Robert Kolodner, the interim national coordinator for health information technology, during the February 26 American Health Information Community (AHIC) town meeting, which took place at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) annual conference and exhibition in New Orleans. In fact, by 2014, "most organizations will have EHRs and PHRs," he said.
