China hospital poisoning was intentional

Healthcare Security Weekly, April 16, 2007

Someone intentionally contaminated food at a Chinese hospital with rat poison, reported the Associated Press (AP).

The poisoning of porridge at the hospital's restaurant on April 9 killed one person and sickened more than 200 who ate the breakfast, China Central Television revealed. The victims included patients and staff at the Heilongjiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Harbin in the northeastern area of the country. Most complained of nausea and diarrhea, but a 77-year-old patient died.

Mass poisonings are common in China, which has been struggling to improve its poor food safety record, the AP said.
