Congressmen ask for study on doc's schedules effect on patient safety
Quality Improvement Monitor, April 13, 2007
High-ranking congressmen are asking for a study on the effect of doctors' schedules on patient safety, according to United Press International (UPI).
The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee has turned its attention to research linking doctor errors to the many hours and long shifts that medical residents, interns, and some other doctors must work as part of its probe into preventable medical errors.
In a letter addressed to William Munier, acting director of the Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the congressmen request that the agency fund an Institute of Medicine study further investigating the connection between doctor work schedules and medical errors, the UPI reported.
