Physicians and UnitedHealth Group battle it out

The UnitedHealth Group's new policy to fine physicians who refer patients to out-of-network laboratories for tests has caused major unrest in the 520,000 physician network the plan covers, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal.

Typically, plans only fine patients who venture to out-of-network services, but this new policy will be the first financial sanction against doctors by an insurer, and it is causing a backlash by physicians and medical associations that demand the insurer rescind the policy.
