Certifiable expertise

Lab Safety Advisor, April 3, 2007

Most laboratorians don't come into the job of safety officer directly. It is often a promotion from the bench. The Specialist in Laboratory Safety from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is the one certification that is specific for clinical laboratory safety. It requires an application and experience during the past five years in a number of safety categories as well as an online exam.

The certified safety professional (CSP) is the most recognized safety credential for all industries. It is not healthcare specific. The CSP requires three years of safety experience and passing of two seven-hour multiple choice exams. Most professionals spend two years preparing for the exam.

Certified Infection Control (CIC) is a credential found more in healthcare. It is the most prestigious credential for people who work in epidemiology and infection control. It requires a bachelor's degree plus passing a four hour exam. CIC candidates must also have two years of experience in infection control.
