Tip of the week: Don't underestimate the importance of training
EHR Connection, April 9, 2007
Training your staff to use a new EHR system can be one of the most difficult parts of making the move to an electronic culture.
"Many people think that you buy software, get a few hours of training, and viola!" says Rod Piechowski, vice president of technology leadership for the National Alliance for Health Information Technology. It's not that simple. Most experts agree that the biggest challenge of implementation is managing the people and getting buy-in, not choosing the perfect software.
While the difficulties in training staff to use an EHR can be extensive, they don't need to be overwhelming. Implementation can be nearly seamless if you give training its proper respect from the start of the project.
Use every available minute for training, says Eric Fishman, MD, president and CEO of West Palm Beach, FL-based EMRConsultant.com. The EHR is too big of an initiative and too expensive to risk failure due to inadequate or poor training.
