Patients report errors, but don't research docs

Quality Improvement Monitor, April 6, 2007

More than 25% of Massachusetts adults said they or a family member had experienced a medical error while hospitalized, according to a survey reported on in the Boston Globe this week.
But most of these same people said they spent less than two hours researching their doctor or hospital, the Globe reported. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts conducted the survey of 1,000 adults.

"What we learned is that Massachusetts consumers are hungry for information to help them make educated decisions when they choose their physician or their hospital," Andrew Dreyfus, the insurer's executive vice president for healthcare services, told the Globe. "But when they have to make those important decisions about where to get care, there is very little usable and reliable information today."
