Fired worker takes hostages at nursing home

Healthcare Security Weekly, April 9, 2007

A 27-year-old nursing home employee, who was fired from his job, returned to the facility in Garland, TX April 3 armed with a handgun. The man took four hostages before surrendering to police three hours later, reported the Associated Press. No one was injured.

The former employee was fired from the Castle Manor nursing home in a suburb of Dallas on March 30. Police evacuated some of the more mobile nursing home residents, but others stayed in their rooms during the standoff, some following the tense drama on television. Many staff members voluntarily remained in the facility to care for the residents reported the Dallas Morning News.
