HealthGrades launches database of physician malpractice records

HealthGrades, a healthcare ratings company, has launched the first national online database of public physician malpractice records. The database includes in formation on medical malpractice judgments, settlements, and arbitration awards against physicians in 15 states.
Of the 15 states that report data (California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Dakota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia) there is wide variation in how much information is provided and how long it stays on a physician's record, according to a HealthGrades press release.
According to HealthGrades' database, the highest percentage of malpractice incidents are in the following specialties:
- Bariatric surgery
- Maternal fetal medicine
- Neurosurgery
- Obstetrics and gynecology
- Cardiothoracic surgery
