Tufts requires DM before gastric bypass

Tufts Health Plan says it has no plans to reconsider a new requirement that bariatric surgery candidates undergo a year in an obesity disease management (DM) program, despite criticism from Massachusetts state officials. The decision by Tufts comes at a time when employers and insurers across the country are struggling with vastly increased demand for gastric bypass, a major procedure with a significant mortality rate.
