White paper: Smart cards the answer to the EHR privacy problem
EHR Connection, April 2, 2007
Up to 15% of patient records at hospitals are duplicates, estimates the Smart Card Alliance, a nonprofit association that works to promote smart cards. This is a huge problem, not only because duplicate records lead to additional administrative costs to correct the errors, but because they also have disastrous clinical and legal consequences.
A new Smart Card Alliance white paper, Smart Cards in U.S. Healthcare: Benefits for Patients, Providers and Payers, describes how healthcare organizations can use smart card technology to enhance security and privacy. They can use smart cards to
- support the privacy and security requirements mandated by HIPAA legislation
- reduce paperwork
- identify patients
- link to EHRs
- reduce the incidence of fraud in claims
- improve the insurance claims process
- provide clean data
- enhance patient control and privacy in EHRs
- enable reliable interoperability with a wide range of systems-via the Internet or offline
