Minnesota health system posts quality info on its Web site

Quality Improvement Monitor, March 30, 2007

Fairview Health Services in Minnesota has started providing details about quality and safety on its most common surgical and clinical procedures on its Web site and comparing them with state and national averages, even when Fairview lags behind, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

"We've tried to present this information so it is meaningful to my mom," Alison Page, Fairview's chief safety officer, told the paper.

Fairview posts its performance on asthma, diabetes, clogging of the arteries, high blood pressure, and screenings for chlamydia and breast, colon and cervical cancer and tells viewers what percentage of patients get all the right care for specific conditions, the Star Tribune reported.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg," Page said. "If I'm a consumer, what does this mean to me? It might cause me to ask if I'm receiving the right antibiotics." (For more information on Fairview's success on pay-for-performance, read the May issue of the Quality Improvement Report).
