Candid camera raises privacy issues for hospitals

Healthcare Security Weekly, April 2, 2007

As well as helping to improve hospital security, new technology has created concerns as well.

At Children's Hospital in Boston, a nurse recently discovered a Webcam hooked up by parents in their child's hospital room, reported the Boston Herald. The discovery stunned the patient's doctor, Samuel Blackman, MD, a pediatric oncologist, and raised questions about privacy issues, the newspaper reported.

The child's parents set up the camera so the child's favorite relative could see what was going on during the hospital stay. Blackman asked the parents to remove the camera, the newspaper reported. Children's Hospital families are free to film their own child, but must have permission to record staff or other patients, a hospital spokesman told the newspaper.
