Louisiana hospital worker arrested for ID theft

Healthcare Security Weekly, April 2, 2007

St. Tammany Parish investigators have broken up an identity theft ring involving a Louisiana hospital employee, her son, and daughter-in-law, reported WDSU-TV.

Police said a worker at Slidell Memorial Hospital would get information on patients who died at the facility and pass it on to her son. The son would then file fraudulent credit card applications using the dead patient's birth dates and Social Security numbers, police said.

The female employee would also send text messages to her son when a patient had died or was about to die, police said. The son had a list of about 70 names, according to the television station. The employee and son face 124 counts of identity theft, along with other charges. The daughter-in-law is also charged with 84 counts of identity theft.
