Tip of the week: Properly dispose of pharmaceuticals

Healthcare Security Weekly, April 2, 2007

A Wisconsin hospital has stepped up to the challenge of properly disposing of pharmaceuticals to help protect the environment.

At the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, pharmacists, physicians, and nurses put their patients' unused drugs in black, 18-gal. bins that are liberally distributed throughout the hospital.  A licensed hazmat carrier collects the drugs regularly and takes them to Illinois, where the nearest Environmental Protection Agency-approved incinerator is located.

To learn more, go to www.hcpro.com/ppv-66854.html. The cost is $10. Briefings on Hospital Safety subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
