Safe storage of chemicals

Lab Safety Advisor, March 20, 2007

Some believe that chemicals in the lab should be stored alphabetically, but this is not recommended because many chemicals are incompatible with each other.

If containers of incompatible chemicals leak or break, dangerous reactions or explosions could occur. For example, acetic acid is not compatible with sulfuric acid or nitric acid, so they would need to be stored in separate locations.

The environmental safety Web page from the University of Vermont has a useful chemical storage table that lists 10 chemical categories with storage recommendations.
