Nevada hospitals snub conference on accountability

Quality Improvement Monitor, March 23, 2007

All major southern Nevada hospitals opted not to attend a national risk management company's conference this week on disclosure and accountability, according to the Las Vegas Sun.

The conference by the Risk Management and Patient Safety Institute comes at a time when the Nevada Legislature is considering a bill that would allow doctors to say they are sorry for medical mistakes without having that admission used against them in lawsuits. Critics say hospitals snubbed the conference because they don't want to be more forthcoming about admitting medical errors, the Sun said.

Spokespeople for some of the area's 10 major hospitals deny that, saying they would have sent employees to the two-day local event had they known about it. Organizers did a poor job of getting the word out, they said.

"It boggles the mind that none of the major Las Vegas hospitals are sending a risk management official to a major disclosure conference in Las Vegas," said Kemila Hartwell, a former Nevada resident of 20 years and president of Patients for Health Care Access in Auburn, CA.
