Grieving family members accused of hospital attack

Healthcare Security Weekly, March 26, 2007

A father and two teenage sons face criminal charges stemming from what police said was a violent attack on several emergency room workers at the Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, IN earlier this month.

Police went to the hospital shortly after a 19-year-old member of that family was brought by ambulance to the emergency room in full cardiac arrest, reported the Courier-Journal of Louisville, KY. The teen's father and two other sons, ages 14 and 16, began throwing furniture and attacking hospitals staff members when they were told of his death from an apparent drug overdose, according to a police affidavit and report.

The family members allegedly injured seven people, including a security guard who was initially admitted to the intensive care unit. After an arrest warrant was issued, the father checked himself into the psychiatric ward of Louisville's VA Hospital, according to WLKY-TV.
