Tip of the week: Staff relationships bolster infection control efforts

Infection Control Monitor, March 23, 2007

Staff relationships can play an important role in efforts to reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections in hospitals.

Success in decreasing central venous catheter infections requires cooperation between departments, which may not exist at many hospitals. Researchers who conducted a catheter infection study found that staff relationships are an important area to consider, according to a report published in the December 28, 2006, New England Journal of Medicine.

Success requires a strong partnership between the intensive care unit physicians, nurses, and infection control professionals, says Peter Pronovost, MD, PhD, one of the researchers. To learn more about reducing these infections, go to www.hcpro.com/content/67647.cfm. The cost is $10. Briefings on Infection Control subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
