Coding tip: Billing for new procedures

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 20, 2007

When you add new technology or new procedures at your facility, beware of coding advice from equipment representatives.

You are more like to use the correct code(s) if you research the coding yourself with the American Medical Association (publisher of the CPT manual), CMS, Blue Cross/Blue Shield , specialty manuals, specialty societies (some physician specialty societies offer coding guidance or publish books on coding which you may find helpful), consult with a coding specialist, etc.

Many times you might have to use an "unlisted" procedure code. If no code exists, do not use a code that does not fit the description of the service, which is considered fraudulent.
