PPV: Organizations look to existing work force to take on CDI efforts

Editor's note: The following article reports on the results of two HCPro, Inc., surveys that asked organizations about their clinical documentation improvement (CDI) programs. The first survey, conducted in November 2006, had 2,495 respondents. The follow-up survey, conducted in December 2006, had 486 respondents.

Despite the expense, half of the organizations surveyed in late 2006 report that they have dedicated clinical documentation specialists who review cases during inpatient stays and work collaboratively with physicians to ensure that medical records are complete and accurate.

For those organizations that don't have dedicated specialists, one reason is cost. Twenty-one percent of the respondents to the follow-up survey reported that they didn't have specialists because they couldn't justify the expense. However, the biggest reason is that 55% of the organizations have existing staff perform functions related to CDI.
