Verichip supports PHR bill, implants microchips in diabetics
EHR Connection, March 19, 2007
The Personal Health Information Act, introduced by Congressman Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), is getting some muscle from VeriChip Corporation, a provider of radio frequency identification (RFID) for healthcare and patient-related needs.
The bill proposes that a fund be set up to provide financial incentives for physicians who establish interactive electronic personal health records for their patients. VeriChip is likely banking on the theory that if the bill gets passed, more customers will need its RFID-based VeriMed Patient Identification System, consisting of the VeriMed implantable microchip and corresponding patient database.
At an Atlanta diabetes exposition sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, VeriChip implanted VeriMed RFID microchips in 18 conference attendees who volunteered for the procedure. The VeriMed Patient Identification System, which uses an implantable RFID microchip in combination with a handheld RFID scanner and a secure patient database, provides immediate access to important health information for patients who arrive at an emergency department unable to communicate.
