Safety council makes progress

Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, March 16, 2007

Nearly a year after the Seminole County (FL) Patient Safety Council started meeting, some of its recommended patient safety initiatives can be seen in the halls of Seminole County hospitals.

All three hospitals have started using Post It notes printed with sayings such as, "Legible handwriting improves outcomes," and, "Write right, legible handwriting keeps patients safe." These sticky notes are used to remind personnel that taking the time to write medical notes and directives legibly could mean the difference between life and death, says the Orlando Sentinel.

The council is also working to address the causes of staph infections and educate patients and staff about new healthcare technology.

Representatives from Florida Hospital Altamonte, Orlando Regional South Seminole Hospital, and Central Florida Regional Hospital sit on the safety council, which also includes members of the Seminole County Medical Society, the county Health Department, and the Florida Health Care Coalition. The council meets every four months to create new patient safety initiatives as well as more uniform protocols for patient care.
