Belgian hospital uses technology to monitor care
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, March 9, 2007
Many hospitals are using real-time locating systems to track where patients are in the hospital, but the University Hospital of Ghent (UHG) in Belgium has started using the technology to track vital signs and keep its staff informed of patients' conditions.
According to www.rfidupdate.com, the hospital's nurses carry wireless voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) phones that can allow them to see a patient's blood pressure, oxygen level, and electrocardiogram images. If a patient's vital statistics change dramatically or if there is an emergency, the phones issue an alert.
UHG, an 1,100-bed hospital, demonstrated the technology at the HIMSS conference in New Orleans last week.
