Cleveland Clinic cuts out trans fats

Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, March 15, 2007

Cleveland Clinic announced earlier this week that it will eliminate trans fatty acids from its patient and cafeteria menus, becoming one of the first hospitals in the country to do so.

Trans fat has been linked to cancer and increases in heart disease among Americans. The health system says that all artificial fats will be removed from its own menus by March 1. Outside vendors with locations at the hospitals have been asked to eliminate the fats by July 1.

Cleveland Clinic is a leader in heart health, and therefore has a responsibility to provide patients, visitors, and employees with an environment that encourages good health, says Delos M. "Toby" Cosgrove, who has been CEO and president of Cleveland Clinic since 2004.
