Tip of the week: Don't forget satellite facilities in survey prep efforts
Healthcare Security Weekly, March 19, 2007
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center underwent a Joint Commission survey in October 2006. Bill Smith, director of environmental health and safety, offers this piece of advice: Spread the word throughout the hospital about your emergency preparedness plans and each person's role in them.
It seemed that all the surveyors asked about these plans everywhere in the hospital and even more so at the satellite buildings off the main campus.
During the 90-minute emergency management session with surveyors and the hospital's environment of care team, an ambulatory surveyor participated along with the administrator surveyor. In Smith's mind, the ambulatory surveyor's presence underscored the fact that surveyors see satellite facilities as possible weak links and are zeroing in on them.
