Pittsburgh businesses back Bush's transparency plan

Quality Improvement Monitor, March 16, 2007

Representatives from dozens of Pittsburgh businesses, government agencies and health-care insurers this week met to the Bush administration's executive order to provide consumers better information about the cost and quality of healthcare services, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Last summer, Bush issued an executive order directing government agencies to make publicly available information about the price and quality of medical services. In November, Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt urged employers in the private and public sectors to take the same steps, according to the paper.

Price and quality "transparency" are the cornerstones for Bush's plan to curb healthcare costs by introducing competition in the system and allowing consumers to make informed decisions about their healthcare purchases, the Post-Gazette said.
