Outpatient surgery dominates eye surgery, muscle and tendon procedures

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 13, 2007

Almost 97 percent of cataract and lens procedures were performed at outpatient centers, making these procedures the most common type of outpatient surgery, according to research from the HHS' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

The research, based on procedure numbers from 2003, showed that muscle and tendon procedures were the second most common surgery performed in outpatient facilities.

Tonsillectomies, orthopedic procedures, and knee cartilage excisions were the third, fourth, and fifth most common outpatient procedures, respectively.
