Reports of flu up; vaccine is still available

Various states such as Oregon and Hawaii report that a higher percentage of flu cases are being seen at this time of year. The number of lab-confirmed cases rose from 58 to 84 within one week in February, reported KOIN News 6 in Portland, OR. The Hawaii Department of Health's flu surveillance program reports a higher percentage of suspected flu cases as well. During the week of February 11-17, 4.1% of patient visits involved people complaining of flu-like symptoms, compared with 2.3% at the same time last year. Health officials say that there is still plenty of vaccine, though, and high-priority groups such as nursing home residents who haven't received the shot yet this year should still consider getting vaccinated.
