Exercise decreases deterioration from Alzheimer's
LTC Liability Monitor, March 13, 2007
Moderate exercise helps to slow deterioration in nursing home residents with Alzheimer's disease, according to the February Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Researchers examined the effects of an exercise program focusing on activities of daily living (ADL), physical performance, nutritional status, behavioral disturbance, and depression in this population. Residents were either assigned to the exercise program or given routine medical care. After 12 months, the average ADL score was significantly more improved in the exercise group than in the routine medical care group. However, the exercise program had no apparent effect on behavioral disturbance, depression, or nutritional assessment scores, according to the Journal.
